Installing Windows 7 on HP Tablet TC1100
I love gadgets; I especially love gadgets that help me be more organized which in turn helps me be more productive.
The HP Tablet TC1100 originally came out in 2003 and at that time the operating system was Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, which added the Tablet and Ink capabilities. Since then Microsoft has made tremendous improvements to the ink and hand writing capabilities in Vista and now in Windows 7. HP however does not have compatible drivers for Windows 7. Why you say? Good question, I can’t think of a good reason for this. Thankfully a kind soul took it upon himself to tinker with it and get it working. The below link documents his labors to get Windows 7 installed on the Tablet. Why would you want to do this? Well, Windows 7 totally rocks on the HP Tablet and is totally worth upgrading. The main reason is the performance, the ink features, and handwriting recognition. Awesome stuff.

INSTALL USING USB
Since the Tablets do not come with a DVD drive you will need to either attach an external DVD or create a Windows 7 Installation USB Stick. The following website IntoWindows link walks you through creating a USB installation stick.

BOOT HP TABLET TC1100 TO USB
The following will allow you to boot from the USB stick. By default you will not be able to boot from the USB Stick.
Put the USB Stick in the USB Slot on the computer.
Start up the Tablet and hit the jog dial and Launch System Setup.
Scroll over to the Advanced Tab
Scroll down to Boot Order and hit Enter
Select Hard Drive and hit Enter
Hit the -/+ to move up the USB drive to the top of the list.
Hit F10 to Save and Exit.
System should automatically boot to the USB drive.

HOW TO TAKE APART COMPUTER TO GET AT INTERNAL MEMORY
The TC1100 has two memory slots and by default comes with 512MB of Ram. This is really not enough ram to run Windows 7 on. You can easily upgrade the memory to 1.5gb by adding a 1gb chip to the external slot (User Accessible Area). To upgrade the machine to 2gb, which I highly recommend you will need to take apart the Tablet to get at the slot. I have done this 3 times without issue, just take your time and review the great photos from the below forum discussion on the subject.

INSTALLATION NOTES
There are no specific Vista or Windows 7 drivers for the HP TC1100 Tablet. You must use the old XP Tablet PC drivers. The trick is to install the drivers in XP Compatibility mode. You do this by right clicking the file, select properties, then click on the Compatibility tab. Under the Compatibility mode put a check under “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows XP SP2. Click Apply and then Ok. Double click or right click and select Run as Administrator.

If you have the HP Compaq Laptop Wireless 2100 802.11b Mini-PCI Card [Part #: 348997-001], you will have to manually connect computer to NETWORK with Ethernet and run Windows Update to get the Wireless working.
To determine which one you have you will need to unscrew one of the back covers and look at the HP Part Number.

well done. Installed win7 and a 160 gb HD. Have you had issues with stanby? Mine will not wake up from standby and sleep mode. Trolling for info as I write.
Hmmm. I have three tablets and have done multiple W7 installs and have not had a problem with standby or sleep mode. I did have problems with the screens locking up before I installed the update video driver (hack).
Does everything look alright in the computer management/device manager? Verify that the driver for the Display Adapter [NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go 32M] is version 8.2.1.2 .
Go into the Power Options and restore default settings to see if that makes any difference.
Couple things that I would try if this was mine.
1. Reinstall the Updated Video Driver (hack)
2. I would run through a new install and see if that fixes

Hi, Really struggling to get the Pen to work with Windows 7, please can someone help? I’ve tried running the installation files as admin and in compatibility mode but doesn’t seem to work. Can someone please walk me through the steps I have to take?

Yeah, I had problems getting the pen to work as well. Want to see the system recognizes the pen. Let me know what you find. I’ll try to help in any way that I can.
Go into the Control Panel | Uninstall Program. Do you see anything with the Pen Tablet?
Click on the link in the upper left installed updates. Do you see anything with the Pen Tablet or anything with Pen?
Click on the Start button and right click on Computer and select Properities. Under System do you have a value called Pen and Touch. Does the value show “Pen Input Available”.

I, too, couldn’t get my TC1100’s display to return after Standby (“Sleep”), and the instructions here and at http://mobilepcwiki.com/mpc/index.php?title=HP/TC1100/Windows_7_Installation_Notes were not clear enough for me. I had installed sp27014–the HP video driver–but it took me a while to figure out that I needed to also find Nvidia’s Forceware 82.12 package. As of today that package is freely available at http://www.filehippo.com/download_nvidia_forceware_xp/680
Extract its contents, then replace the two files from “fix.zip” (link is in the Wiki article), set compatibility mode and install. After restart, no more problem resuming from Standby. BTW, the fix.zip files are necessary to modify the 82.12 package’s .inf file so it will install against the TC1100’s video adapter.

Im using in the other Tablet (same model) Windows XP Tablet Edition and it works well.

I believe that the Q Menu and NVIDIA video driver need to be installed first and then the install the Tablet PC Buttons (24241).

Neither the SP27014 works on compatibility mode.
I’m from Brazil and I believe these drivers will not work with my portuguese software.
Instead, i’ve put all the icons from Tablet Menu on screen.
It takes some time to double click them, but it works well (laughs).

Not sure if the language is the problem. I have installed W7 on multiple Tablets and have not run into a problem with the buttons not working. Wish I knew of something else to try. Sorry.

Make sure that you install the nvidia video driver first, then the q menu driver, then the tablet pc button driver.

Good question. You do not need to buy a special edition of Windows 7 for the Tablet componets. Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise include the Tablet components.

hello cameron,l got everything to work except for the keyboard. l have installed the drivers which had to be installed from a floppy but the tabet doesnt seem to recognize it. Any thoughts?

Wow! I have not heard of any problems with the keyboard. Huh… Truly weird… Did the keyboard worked in XP? I don’t know of any drivers for the keyboard besides the BIOS update, but I don’t know if that would be what you are talking about with the floppy.
I really don’t know what else to check. Does the stylus work? What about in the Device Manager, do you see any missing devices?

I have a tc1100 with w7 but the pen doesn’t work. At all. I looked under “system” and there is a value “pen & touch”, but it still doesn’t work. Help please?

I really love Windows 7 on the TC1100. This is really such a great device with Windows 7 on it. I recall having this issue before. Try to uninstall the Wacom Pen Driver and install the default HP TC1100 driver.

Hey Cameron I really need help rebuilding my Hp Compaq tc1100, I need to install any kind of windows on it, I’ve tried windows 7 with no sucess trying to find the drivers for it, I tried XP SP3 with no luck finding neither the Pen driver nor the Keyboard one. Would you please help me out I need to get this PC running as soon as posible in order to use it for college!!

As a note I tried all the drivers on HP.com running them under the compability mode (XP SP2) but they didnt work either, the keyboard is still the big issue, I might want to install 7 on it again and try the drivers again but its takes a while to rebuild it, I really need your help, I’ve tried everything, I’m tired out and wouldn’t want my hopes to use this PC to be devasted due to a simple drivers problem.
What version of W7? Has to be Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate. W7 Basic does not have the stylus support. Also, I believe that it must be Windows XP Tablet edition and not XP Home or Pro. I don’t believe those have the stylus support, forgive me, its been a long time, trying to remember that.
It should automatically have basic pen and keyboard support with the basic install of W7. Hmmm…
What is missing in the Device Manger?
Did the pen and keyboard work before you install W7?
Are you getting any lights on the keyboard, cap locks?
Try disconnecting the keyboard and reconnecting it, run a hardware scan in device manager to see if it comes back.
Hello. I’ve installed win7 on my TC1100, everything works fine except the trackpoint. I don’t know did it work before or not – the installation was faulty. the previous owner says that it was in working condition before. Must it work immediately after installing? Any idea? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a hardware problem. I don’t know of any hw driver for the keyboard. I do recall a BIOS update for the keyboard, but I never installed it.

It might be a different wireless card than what I mention. You may need to remove the back plate and take a look at what type of card it is and download the appropriate drivers.

Just make sure that you put the file in compatibility mode WinXP before launching the executable.

I read your article and found it very helpful, but I now have a question. I have a HP TC1100 tablets plus all of the external accessories. The TC110 that I have has the 1.2 GHz Intel processor, 2 GB of ram and a 93 GB hard drive.
I currently use the TC1100 as a backup computer.
I am considering upgrading to Windows 7 and also replacing the hard drive to a larger size and hopefully a faster one.
My question is, should I did this OR use the money needed to purchase Windows 7 & a new hard drive towards the purchase of a new lap top, use my current primary lap top as a backup and just retire the TC1100?

You can get some quality second hand Windows 7 or Windows 8 tablet on the secondary markets on the cheap. If it were me, I would put that money toward a newer model. However, if money is tight it would be cheaper to upgrade the TC1100 with Windows 7 and a larger drive. Windows 7 on the tablet is a really a dream. I still own mine, but it gets used less and less.

At the time the ssd’s were very expensive. also it had to be the special ide type. I often wondered about it though. great device and it was ahead of its time in my opinion.

I need this for the problem when resuming from sleep and yes I have a 5400 rpm hdd not a 4200. What a weird thing is this anyway I thought it was for april fools day on your blog.
The fix.zip is all I need or ever better would be the mod description for the .inf file, the other .dll file is from the hp nvidia driver I suppose.
What I found on a site about the mod is “with Rotateflag instances changed to 0x40” but in the 82.12 .inf file there is only one Rotateflag so am I missing something?

Are you needing the files? I never played around with changing any configuration files (.inf). It just worked for me on W7. I still have the TC1000, but it is gathering dust at this point.

WOW! Thank you so much for the quick reply. I figured this place for dead. 🙂 I actually have had this 1100 for many many years and found it while clearing out the storage. I figured with a new SSD and 2GB Ram (only $18!) it might make use for a good media/skype machine. And boy was I right. Working surprisingly decent now with the SSD. I have a Bluetooth skipping problem now that I am trying to iron out, but figured I would do the full install as mentioned on the wiki link above (which has most links dead as you can imagine).
I will try the files you have provided. Using the ones I have tried to download results in a “not supported” exception.

What is the model of the SSD you put in it? That would def help in making it bit faster. Man I love that thing. The inking was fantastic. The Surface 3 pretty much replaced the TC1100 for me.
I might have to pull it out from the cobwebs and bring it back online… 🙂
Hah! The Surface Pro 3 is actually my other machine.:D While also cleaning out my storage I ran into a bunch of old comics and really connected with a childhood dream of being a comic book artist. That was before I became a .NET developer. So, after learning the SP3 is essentially a drawing tablet (duh! — but only 256 levels of pressure like the TC1100) I basically created a studio with 2 stations: one with my rig, one with my SP3, and now the TC1100 supplements my main rig. Well really BOTH since it’s Bluetoothed.
My main rig is a Windows Server w/ Hyper-V and has problems w/ playing video/audio, hence the need for a secondary device. Well that and it’s nice to have that separation, in any case.

Both worked no problem. I agree with other sentiments that I have seen that the drive isn’t a shockingly fast upgrade, but it certainly makes things “snappier” which is what I was after, really. Before the upgrade it was unbearable, but now it’s to the point where I can see myself using it.
Seriously, let’s see how long we can keep the Legend going. 🙂 I was really enamored to see how well-loved this device is/was while doing the research. I have to say that I agree. It is exceptionally well-designed! I really shouldn’t admit this, but I actually tried to pawn it off at a garage sale (reason why I was going through storage), and now I am glad no one even looked at it. Really looking to see how much usage I can yield out of it now. ❤
I run four TC1100’s all with 2gb memory and SSD drives. One still on SP3 for old times sake and three on W7 both Home and Pro. All work very well and up to useable speed.

Don’t use the attached keyboard. The latches strain an area of the motherboard and eventually cause the dreaded chequer pattern …the end, unless you have a spare board If you want a keyboard buy an USB one.
The other problem is wear in the jack plug and socket, needing fiddly resoldering of new sockets and replaced chargers.
Sadly, batteries almost all gone. Has anyone learned how to rebuild with new cells?
I just dusted mine off the other day and fired it up. So many good qualities in this tablet. The screen size is fantastic. Love using in portrait mode and just like you mentioned detached from keyboard. I had the large docking mechanism that was great to use in portrait mode. I don’t miss the fan noise… geez, kind of loud… 🙂 Fantastic device. I’ll always hang onto this one as my first tablet.
Thanks for your comment. None of mine make any fan noise – at least maybe a tiny swish now and then. you need to clean out the fluff …. maybe you are hearing a noisy hard drive? A 120gb SSD is ideal. The TC1100 won’t recognise a bigger volume which is a fault for nowadays. Of course it’s weighty compared with wafer thin modern trash. I make huge use of Windows Journal The Q-menu is useful. I’ve got a docking station thing but don’t you need the keyboard there? I’ve never used it. Speakers are good too for listening without ear buds. And in winter it keeps my hands warm ! If I need to go lightweight I use my old Blackberry 10 — Mary
